How Do I Choose a Budget Gaming Monitor?
Screen size is one of the most important factors in choosing a new monitor, whether you’re gaming or working from home. Consider your space constraints as well as your budget; the bigger the monitor, the bigger the price tag tends to be, all else being equal. Resolution is also an important consideration; 1080p is the norm in most budget-class monitors for gaming. Buying a 4K monitor when your graphics card isn’t up to snuff is pointless.
Then, look at the types of games you’ll be playing. Input lag is especially crucial for competitive gaming, while refresh rate and HDR will benefit most gamers with smoother, more vibrant image quality. Some gaming monitors offer support for variable refresh rate, or VRR, which enables the display to match the refresh rate that your GPU is capable of pushing, resulting in a smooth gaming experience. It’s important to note that G-Sync and FreeSync monitors require a compatible graphics card with a DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 2.0/2.1 output.
The most common panel types for budget gaming panels are vertical alignment, or VA, and in-plane switching, or IPS. IPS panels offer good color quality and wide viewing angles, while VA panels also offer robust colors, but aren’t quite as broadly viewable from off-center angles. Mini LEDs and OLEDs are also becoming more common, offering superior brightness and contrast, but you likely won’t be seeing affordable prices on those anytime soon.
Are Cheap 144Hz Monitors Worth It?
Remember: The price of a monitor is directly related to the screen size, panel technology, and features, so if you’re paying less, there’s likely a trade-off. Having a high refresh rate doesn’t guarantee that your games will be free of screen tearing; you also have to take into account your graphics card’s capabilities. As technology advances, we have been seeing cheaper monitors at higher refresh rates.
How Much Do Decent Monitors Cost?
That depends on the type of monitor you’re shopping for: screen size, available features, and the target audience all contribute to the asking price. You can get a basic 23- or 24-inch productivity-geared panel for less than $100, but don’t expect it to have high refresh rates or an adjustable stand. A decent budget monitor will set you back around $150 on sale. As for a gaming monitor, the 27-inch ViewSonic Omni VX2728J-2K offers excellent color range and high color accuracy for just $200.

Why Are Curved Monitors More Expensive?
A curved monitor not only enhances the immersivity of your gaming experience, but it can give you an upper hand, depending on the game you’re playing. Many battle-royale games, for example, support a 21:9 resolution, so a wider curved monitor could give you a wider field of view than a standard 16:9 panel.
Curved monitors are measured by degree of curvature, denoted by an R (for radius). For example, a ring of 1500R monitors would form a circle with a radius of 1,500mm. The lower the number, the tighter the curve, which mimics the eye’s curvature.
