Flamengo beat Palmeiras to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title, but the Verdão could yet have the last laugh. South America’s equivalent of the Champions League, the Copa Libertadores is by far the continent’s richest prize, and even the most die-hard Mengão would struggle to deny that Abel Ferreira’s men have been the competition’s standout team this season.

After sailing through their group stage, round of 16 and quarter-final ties, scoring 26 goals in the process, Palmeiras flirted with disaster in the semis. They lost the first leg 3-0, before getting themselves out of jail with a 4-0 beatdown of LDU Quito, Raphael Veiga’s second-half brace completing the most preposterous of comebacks.
Filipe Luís’ men have made things interesting too. While Flamengo have been scoring for fun domestically, right from the off they’ve found goals much tougher to come by in the Copa Libertadores. They needed a shootout to shake off Estudiantes in the quarters, and were left desperately clinging onto a 1-0 lead over Racing when Gonzalo Plata saw red in the 56th minute of the semi-final second leg.
Palmeiras came out on top when they met in the 2021 final, with that man Veiga, incidentally, finding the net again that night. But they’re on an awful run of form right now, having failed to win any of their last five. Flamengo, meanwhile, beat Palmeiras twice in the league this season, and Bruno Henrique’s midweek heroics have delivered a timely shot in the arm. Ferreira needs Flaco Lopez and Vitor Roque to locate their shooting boots.
