I’m always on the hunt for movies I haven’t seen. Some people love to curl up in their comfort movies and watch the same ones over and over again. Not me. I want to be constantly checking new movies off my list whenever I get the time to sit down and watch one.

Because of this, I’ve had to go to extra lengths to search out movies I haven’t seen before. Sure, it’s easy to just post up and watch movies on cable or enjoy popular movies on Netflix or HBO Max. But I want to stream movies that I haven’t heard of before finding them. I want the real strange ones that have escaped the masses or maybe had their heyday well before I was born. That’s why I use Mometu.

Mometu is free streaming with lots of choices

You probably have never heard of it

Mometu is a completely free streaming service that offers ad-supported viewings. It’s available on streaming devices and smart TV operating systems like Tizen, Roku TV, Fire TV, and webOS. Mometu goes out of its way to highlight movies you haven’t heard of. From its website:

We specialize in independent, hard-to-find, niche-based, and international movies, shows, documentaries, streaming channels, and short films. You’ll be surprised by what you can find on Mometu once you go down the rabbit hole!

As you’re using Mometu, you’ll realize that there is so much content in the world that either was never introduced to you or you missed it entirely. Mometu might have that obscure movie you once heard about but could never find streaming anywhere. I was shocked at how many movies on Mometu I’d never heard of. It was legit more than two-thirds of the films and I consider myself a decently well-educated moviegoer.

That’s what makes Mometu special: the ability to surprise audiences. If there’s a niche movie topic, you might find it while you’re searching through this niche streaming platform

The genre picks are insane and fun

    Mometu makes for fun searching

When you’re using the app, you can choose a few different menus to look through. The main homepage has a list of movies that you can look through. But these aren’t movies categorized as just “Drama” or “Comedy.” They have more obscure filtering, such as “The Cosmic Veil” and “Twilight Labyrinth.”

If you want to enjoy masters of film, there are categories for Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and an entire section on Frankenstein’s Universe. You can search for movies by Icons of the Silver Screen, like Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, or Katharine Hepburn. Not only will you find obscure horror movies like Live by One Person, but you can also watch Oscar-winning films like Mrs. Miniver.

Of course, you’ll find Mrs. Miniver listed under the subgenre “Shadow Diplomacy.” If that’s not the vibe that you’re looking for, you can opt for “Popcorn Bliss”, which includes movies like G Storm and Zombie School. I’ve had so much fun searching for movies on this app, mostly because I get to check out movie posters and descriptions for movies I never knew existed.

You can look for movies in other ways too

The channels will show you around

You can use the search function, which lets you type in movies that you want to look for. Unfortunately, it doesn’t populate movies as you’re typing, like many other streaming services do. So, you have to, more or less, know the name of the movie that you’re looking for. You can also type in the name of an actor or actress, and it will populate any movie that it has with that actor or actress in it.

If you want to scan what Mometu has to offer without having to search, the Channels’ menu will let you see what movies and TV shows the streaming service has. That’s right: Mometu also has TV series. You don’t only have to watch movies that you’ve never heard of before. There’s also TV series that aren’t incredibly popular either.

A list of some of the channels available include:

    • JB TV Music Television
    • Cooking Panda
    • FEVA TV
    • Black Movies Max
    • Humor Mill
    • Lights Out Xtreme Fighting
    • A to Z Western Grit
    • Dark Matter TV

These are free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels that are shown with ads to break up the programming. Some of the channels have only one series while others have shows that are all similar to one another and fall in line with whatever the channel is called.

Channels isn’t the only place to watch TV

Following in the Mometu movie manner, the Shows menu gives you TV series options with fun filters and sub-genres. This means you aren’t searching for shows labeled as “sci-fi” or something along those lines. Instead, you’re getting filters like “Timeless Treasures from Yesteryear”, which lists shows like Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies.

What is strange is that Mometu doesn’t have the full series of the shows it has listed. For example, you can watch only Season 2 of The Beverly Hillbillies on the app. There were nearly 300 episodes of the series, but you can only watch 19 on the app. So, this isn’t the app where you’re going to be able to binge-watch an entire series, but you can at least get a taste of plenty of shows to enjoy.

There are shows from China, Japan, and Korea that earn spotlights in the category list. For any shows that are of interest to you, you can add them to your favorites list, which can be stored in the app. You can sign up for a free account with your email address in the app. By doing so, you create a profile, which gives you the ability to save favorites or even return to programming you’ve started before.

Get a ton of niche movies and shows with Mometu

If you want to enjoy unique shows and movies, Mometu is a free ad-supported streaming service with a lot to offer. It gives you options in terms of recent and older content, as well as the ability to search for what you want to watch. With fun and unique filters and categories, you’ll have a good time searching through all the content. While it may not have many movies that you’ve heard of, Mometu has a great selection of older classic films and unique picks that make it worth checking out.
