They let you build your own specialized AI assistants — complete with custom instructions, a defined persona, and any supporting documents you need. If you find yourself repeating the same workflows, a Gem can turn that routine into a streamlined, automated process.
I’ve been using Gems for a while, and a few of my custom setups have genuinely saved me hours.

Make it shorter and more meaningful
This is a custom Gem that helps me summarize anything and everything I throw at it. I can share large documents, articles, books, or even research that I want outlined, and the summarizer Gem will break it down into a concise bullet summary with a brief breakdown.
The summarizer Gem will break each topic into a short bulleted list, providing key takeaways, conclusions, and topic-wise breakdowns in any format I define. You can even ask it to break down each pointer in an extended summary as well.
Setting up a custom Gemini Gem is straightforward. Open the Gemini Assistant on your desktop or phone, then expand the menu and go to Explore Gems. Choose + New Gem, and you’ll be taken to the setup page. Enter the required Name, Description, Instructions, and Knowledge exactly as provided. Once everything is filled in, save the Gem.

You can even ask the Gemini Gem to go more in-depth and ask what the best places to visit are, what the best food to have is, which are the best hotels, and more. It’s a personal assistant that helps us plan our travels better.

If I’m unsure of what to make for dinner, I can list all the ingredients I have, and Chef Gem will suggest a dish that meets my restrictions. But that’s not all; I can also ask the Gem to create a weekly meal plan, provide recipe ideas, and generate ingredient lists.
