‘Tis the season to be jolly, as Prime Video — like all the best streaming services — is adding tons of new shows and movies to its catalog this December. That lineup includes new original series and movies, beloved classics, and even a growing slate of live sports. With Prime Video now hosting both NBA and NFL games, it’s more important than ever to stay on top of what’s coming to it each month.
My top picks for December include a few of this year’s blockbusters you absolutely shouldn’t sleep on, like Wes Anderson and Michael Cera’s first team-up in “The Phoenician Scheme” or Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie to end all vampire movies, “Sinners.” There’s also a hit Prime Original series that’s got my spurs jingle jangle jingling, with “Fallout” season 2 heading to New Vegas on December 17.

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ (December 5)
THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME – Official Trailer [HD] – Only in Theaters May 30 – YouTube

I was surprised to learn that “The Phoenician Scheme” was Michael Cera and Wes Anderson’s first collab. Cera’s brand of awkwardness seems tailor-made for the cozy corners of the Anderson cinematic universe. He joins a stacked cast in the legendary director’s ensemble that includes Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
The story follows Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), a wealthy tycoon and arms dealer who is fed up with assassination attempts ruining his daily routine. After yet another brush with death, he decides to mend fences with his estranged daughter, Sister Liesl (Mia Threapleton), by naming her his sole heir. That bold move puts them both in the crosshairs of some dangerous people. Who, if anyone, will survive the mad scramble? You’ll have to watch this espionage black comedy to find out.

How lucky can one guy be? Prime Video’s hit video game adaptation is going right merrily along to New Vegas this month with “Fallout” season 2. It’s set to focus heavily on both recovering vault dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell) and her dad Hank (Kyle MacLachlan), following the climactic showdown at the Griffith Observatory that closed out season 1. The finale at long last brought the show’s three leads together — Lucy, the ambitious Brotherhood of Steel soldier Maximus (Aaron Moten), and a sharp-shooting Hollywood relic known only as the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) — as they close in on Moldaver (Sarita Choudhury) and her critical cold fusion tech that has the power to reshape the irradiated wasteland.
The encounter left Lucy questioning everything she knew about the Vaults that were once billed as humanity’s savior. Season 2 sees her and the Ghoul set out to track Hank down, blow the lid off long-buried truths, and confront whoever has been really pulling the strings all these years. My money’s on Mister House (played by Rafi Silver in a blink-and-you-miss-it season 1 cameo), the enigmatic overlord of New Vegas who’s like post-apocalyptic Gordon Gekko with a pinch of Walt Disney.

‘Sinners’ (December 26)

“Sinners” is one of my favorite movies of all time, though I’d argue any day of the week that it shares more in common with a romantic drama than a horror film. Take out the occasional vampire shenanigans and that bloody finale, and you’re left with a searing love story that transcends time. It’s as much about the undead as it is about yearning and the tender perseverance of the human spirit.
Don’t miss these
“Sinners” stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, a duo of bright-eyed hustlers who flee their troubled lives in Chicago to open a juke joint in their rural Mississippi hometown. Their fresh start becomes a beacon for lost souls, a communion of music and star-crossed lovers on opening night, that attracts the attention of something more sinister than they ever thought possible.
