My HiFi system is my pride and joy. It’s my Elysium, my Nirvana. And at the core of it all, beyond the amplifier and all the other source devices, lie these — the KEF LS50 Meta. I love these speakers, and thanks to a hefty price reduction this Black Friday, you can get a pair for a whole lot less.
The KEF LS50 Meta are now $1,199 at Amazon. That’s a $400 saving on full price. No, they’re not cheap, but if you’re in the market for some HiFi speakers, these are the models to buy.
OK, so why did I choose the LS50 Meta? I’ll admit, there was part of it that was down to the way that they looked. They only earned their audition when I was speaker shopping because they look cool. During that audition, though, they blew me away with their incredible sound quality.
The detail was off the charts, and they made it feel like the music was all around me in the listen space. While not the bassiest speakers, the low stuff was still effortlessly defined and well timed. They’re a true sight to behold (hear), and they wormed their way into my heart from first listen. Making the purchasing decision was not hard.
Why do you need a pair?
So we’ve established why I bought the LS50 Meta, but not why you should buy a pair — and while it’s mostly down to their incredible sound, there are plenty more reasons to pick up some of these monster speakers. Yes, even though they cost $1,199.
For one, they’re perfect stepping stone into high quality HiFi. If you’ve been rocking some cheaper speakers for a while and want to make the jump to wall-shaking speakers and amplifiers, this is a good place to start. They’re going to sound excellent whatever you plug them into, and then you can maximise their performance later when you want to get a more impressive amplifier.
They’re also a proper looker. They’re the kind of speakers that visitors will look at and ask “what are those?” There’s something otherworldly about them, thanks to their curved shape and meta-material infused driver units on the front.

Bassheads will want a subwoofer – they’re not the bassiest speakers around. The bass that is there is rich and velvety, but if you want more of it you’ll want a companion speaker to enhance the low end.
If you’re being really picky, you’ll want to be choosy about what amp you pair them with. They’ll sound excellent with anything, like I said before, but if you want to get them performing their best you’ll want to plug them into an amp with a warmer signature. That will counteract the detail-oriented sound, and allow the speakers to breathe a little better across the rest of the sound spectrum.
Mine are connected to a Cambridge Audio EXA100, and the results are wonderful. There’s still plenty of detail, but there’s a warmer sound from the British amp that complements the speakers well. It highlights their strengths while masking their weaknesses.
