SpaceX has revived a significant deal on its portable Starlink Mini dish, dropping the price by 40% for US consumers, from $499 to $299.

The deal is available on Starlink.com and Best Buy, which offers in-store pickup and a longer return window. Users in Canada can also get a discount, from CAD$599 to $399.

The Starlink Mini is specifically designed to offer satellite internet service on the go. The hardware is compact enough to fit in a backpack. Additionally, the Wi-Fi router is built into the dish, which also features a kickstand.

On the downside, the smaller dish offers slower speeds. Another issue is that it can only be used with a Starlink Roam plan, which lets you access the satellite internet service from more than one location, but costs $165 per month. (A fixed residential plan typically runs $120 per month.) A $50-per-month Roam plan is also available, but it caps data at 50GB.

It’s not clear how long the $299 deal will last. In mid-May, SpaceX offered the same $299 deal, which remained in effect through the end of the month.

The discount also might be a sign that the company wants to clear out some inventory. Earlier this year, SpaceX indicated it’s working on a follow-up to the Mini model.

In Australia and parts of Iowa, SpaceX has also been offering some lucky users a “free” Starlink Mini dish as part of a promotion that effectively loans out the hardware at no extra charge.

    Experience

I’ve been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I’m currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country’s technology sector.

Since 2020, I’ve covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I’ve combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink’s cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. Earlier this year, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I’m now following how President Trump’s tariffs will affect the industry. I’m always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.
