Leicester began their European campaign with a 39-20 loss to La Rochelle, who ran in six tries, but the much-changed Tigers still had reasons for optimism in defeat. George Pearson, who scored a fine try later on, received a sin bin and it was down to 14 men that the French side’s pack turned the screw. England trio Freddie Steward, Joe Heyes and Jamie Blamire all return this week for the two-time European champions, while Wales’ Tommy Reffell and Nicky Smith are also back to strengthen head coach Geoff Parling’s options.
Leinster, meanwhile, overcame a spirited Harlequins 45-28 in Round 1 to start on the front foot. Jordan Larmour’s brace, plus tries from Garry Ringrose and Ciaran Frawley went a long way to securing the victory. Rieko Ioane made his Leinster debut off the bench against Quins but the All Black center will make his first start on Friday night alongside Robbie Henshaw, with James Lowe returning to the backline, while Caelan Doris will again captain the four-time champions – runners-up in three of the last four seasons – from the back row. RG Snyman misses out, though, in the pack and is replaced by James Ryan as head coach Leo Cullen tries to get one over the side he used to serve as a player.
