In recent years, the Oscar for Best Original Song has tended to go to an already popular hit, with an extra leg up if Billie Eilish is involved (see: Barbie, No Time to Die). Musicals have a proven track record for obvious reasons (does A Star Is Born count?), and animated movies also fare well, with Frozen and Coco among them. But as this year’s awards season approaches, it feels like there may almost be too many contenders—especially with Sinners now revealing it’s offering up two submissions.
As Variety reports, Ryan Coogler’s steamy vampire tale is putting forth “I Lied to You,” written by Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson and performed in a memorable Sinners sequence by Miles Caton (who plays Sammie “Preacherboy” Moore), and “Last Time (I Seen the Sun),” the end-credits duet between Caton and Alice Smith that was co-written by Smith, Caton, and Göransson.
The trade notes Caton is also likely to score a Best Supporting Actor nomination among the many nods that Sinners is expected to receive; you can see the full list of the movie’s awards-category submissions at the end of Variety’s post. (There are a lot.)
And while in some years, you’d assume Sinners would be a runaway favorite in the Best Song category, there are some other important considerations this time around.
There are also two new songs coming in Wicked: For Good, featuring the powerhouse pipes of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo—and a catchy chart-topper titled “Golden” from a little movie called KPop Demon Hunters you may have heard of.
