Google is rolling out a new firmware update that changes how Nest Mini and Nest Audio smart speakers display colors or animations of their lights. Instead of just white, the lights now flash in multiple Gemini colors when you say “Hey Google.” This update delivers a small but visible upgrade to the look of your Nest smart speaker. It also ties into Google’s broader Gemini AI rollout.

Google’s Nest speakers get a new update to show different light colors

As per reports, the colors of the Google Nest speaker’s lights are getting a new behavior via firmware version 3.77.500695 for users in the Preview Program. After hearing the hotword, the speaker cycles through colors like blue, red, yellow, and green, before returning to white. The change is especially visible on Chalk and Charcoal speaker models.

The shift to colored lights is more than just decoration. It aligns with Google’s push to integrate Gemini AI into its smart home ecosystem under the “Gemini for Home” initiative. This update signals that even existing hardware will adopt the visual style of Google’s AI platform.

To get the update, open the Google Home app on your phone and go to your Nest speaker’s device settings. Under Device information, you’ll find the option to enroll in the Preview Program. Once enrolled, check if firmware version 3.77.500695 is available and install it. After the update, simply say “Hey Google,” and your speaker’s lights will flash in the new Gemini-inspired colors. They will replace the standard white animation.

Google hasn’t forgotten about the existing Nest speaker lineup

Google has confirmed that Gemini for Home will roll out to “every speaker, smart display, camera, and doorbell” the company has released in the past decade. Not all devices will receive the same level of functionality, and some older models may not get the full Gemini Live experience. This is still a major commitment from the brand to support older hardware.

In the meantime, Google is rolling out Gemini for Home in stages, with an early access program starting first. The rollout will kick off for users in the US who enroll in the Early Access program on October 28, 2025. The firm plans to expand the new assistant to more countries in early 2026.
