Google Drive on the web is receiving a major UI update that brings a new navigation feature and a more functional design. The update not only focuses on fixing the existing issues, but also improves readability and a more refined user experience. This update will improve the experience, especially for users who frequently open PDFs, images, or videos in the browser.
Google Drive UI update brings smoother navigation and a smarter file viewer
Google has updated the interface of its Drive on the web. The new interface introduces a modern workspace that brings fixes to the long-standing issues. The biggest improvement of the update seems to be the PDF handling. The left-side panel now shows a table of contents when available, along with thumbnail previews of every page. Because of this subtle change, the navigation feels much more intuitive and user-friendly.
Users can also use the new audio summaries feature, which is powered by Gemini AI. It allows users to hear a quick summary of their detailed PDF documents. They can hear quick overviews directly within the viewer without opening additional menus or switching tabs. This makes the document viewing experience so much better, and also reduces the friction that comes with managing complex files.
Google has also refined several other UI elements
Aside from this, the video files also receive a meaningful change. Using Google Drive‘s new transcript tool, users can type a keyword and jump directly to the moment when a similar keyword appears in the video. The overall UI has been refined as well. The toolbar has been made easier to read, and the file menu becomes much more predictable.
The updated UI layout also creates ample space for the user to focus on content rather than the interface. As for the rollout, the update is currently rolling out to Google’s Rapid Release domains. Customers are set to gain access starting December 11, 2025. Both personal and Workspace accounts will receive the new viewer automatically. No manual installation or update is required.
