In the past, it would be a super huge pain if you were an Apple user that wanted to switch over to Google’s Android platform and vice versa. We’re not sure if it was by design that both companies made it so difficult to switch platforms, but thankfully, over the years, the process has become a lot easier. In fact, more recently, Apple and Google are working together to make switching between platforms a piece of cake. But apparently, we don’t have Apple and Google to thank for easy data transfer; that credit goes to the EU.
The EU wants credit for Apple and Google’s data transfer process
According to the EU Commission, its own Digital Markets Act (DMA) is one of the reasons Apple and Google have made it easier for users to transfer data between platforms. “The European Commission welcomes the cross-OS data portability solution that has been communicated by Apple and Google. This is an example of how the Digital Markets Act (DMA) brings benefits to users and developers.”
The Commission goes on to say, “This OS portability solution will allow users to easily transfer data from iPhone to Android and vice versa when they set up a new device.” They add, “It will support many types of data, including contacts, calendar events, messages, photos, documents, Wi-Fi networks, passwords, and even data from third-party apps. It will also work wirelessly. These are major upgrades compared to the currently limited data transfer solutions.”
But it doesn’t stop there. The EU is also saying that the DMA is the reason behind Apple and Google’s simplified eSIM transfer system. Apparently, it was developed with “intensive discussions with the Commission.” Well, whatever the reason is, at the end of the day it’s good news for users. Similar to when the EU forced Apple’s hand, which resulted in the company adopting USB-C for its iPhones.
Apple and Google make it easier for users to switch platforms
Now, if you weren’t aware, a recent report from 9to5Google revealed that the latest Android Canary build is making it easier for users to transfer data between iOS and Android devices. Apple is also expected to implement that functionality in a future update.
At the moment, both companies have solutions that help users migrate from iOS to Android and vice versa. However, there are still some limitations, and it’s not exactly perfect. But this new solution will help users replace existing apps and offer a transfer function. It is also expected to introduce more functionality and support transfer of data types that were previously unavailable.
