Across the internet, you’ll find endless articles, videos, and social media posts showcasing the talents of AI and what it can achieve. From simplifying your workflow in Google Docs to generating AI videos of cats fighting sharks, AI is everywhere, and people are turning to it more than ever to achieve their goals.

It’s no surprise, then, that users have started using chatbots like ChatGPT to help make decisions, and this latest AI result is one that will surely grab the headlines. Tammy Carvey, a woman from Michigan, recently won $100,000 in the state Powerball lottery, and she did it all thanks to ChatGPT.

“I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers and those are the numbers I played on my ticket,” she told Michigan Lottery. ChatGPT’s selection of the numbers 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and the Powerball 17 matched four correct numbers and the Powerball, taking home a nice big chunk of change.

Obviously, ChatGPT is pulling random numbers from a generator and has no better chance of winning the lottery than you or I, but now the story of ChatGPT winning the lottery is grabbing headlines across the world, and I’d be shocked if more people don’t try to follow in Tammy Carvey’s footsteps.

ChatGPT is quickly becoming one of the most popular websites on the internet, and as I’ve seen firsthand from readers reaching out following the AI chatbot’s outage earlier this year, people really do rely on it.

Using ChatGPT to pick your lottery numbers could be seen as innocent, but what happens when you start to ask for financial advice, investment advice, or even to make important life decisions like what mortgage rate you should apply for?

    A reliance on ChatGPT

The first thing I did when I saw this news earlier today was ask ChatGPT to select lottery numbers for tomorrow’s lottery draw. Then, I stopped for a second and thought about the implications of writing about using AI to select my lottery numbers, not only emphasizing the ability of AI to make financial decisions on your behalf, but also normalizing gambling.

It got me thinking, where does this reliance on AI stop? At what point do we stop highlighting use cases for ChatGPT and question if we should even be using the tool for specific purposes in the first place.

Just last week, OpenAI announced the inclusion of a new ChatGPT mode that will allow adult content, but it begs a bigger question: Why are we even doing this in the first place? Why are we going to ChatGPT for advice? Why are we wanting to use it for adult content? And why have we lost the ability as humans to be critical of the information it provides us?

Don’t get me wrong, I use ChatGPT for a lot of things, such as simple experiments for articles or asking advice on my next purchase. In fact, AI was an incredible source for my recent project of building a gaming PC. That said, the trust in ChatGPT is continuing to alarm me daily, especially when I see how people are starting to integrate it into every aspect of their lives.

Tammy Carvey from Michigan may have just used ChatGPT to pick her lottery ticket numbers, but is that not highlighting a bigger issue? We can’t even pick our own lottery numbers anymore, and don’t get me started on using ChatGPT as a sounding board for conversations – I’m terrified of a future where everyone communicates through AI.

It starts with advice, it leads to lottery ticket wins, and before you know it, we’ll be naming our children because of ChatGPT.
