AI browsers are heating up. With Perplexity’s Comet and other players like Arc baking assistants directly into the browsing flow — and Google integrating Gemini into Chrome — browsing the web is beginning to look a lot different than it did even a few months ago. In fact, it seems to be becoming the next major AI battleground.

Now, OpenAI has entered the fray with its own contender: ChatGPT Atlas.

Atlas is a brand-new browser built entirely around ChatGPT, and it’s available starting today for macOS users (with Windows and mobile coming soon). But this isn’t just ChatGPT slapped on top of Chrome. It’s a full rethink of how we browse, research, plan, shop and get things done — with an AI assistant embedded into every tab, task and decision. You can opt in or out at any time, depending on your preferences.

From summarizing pages and resurfacing what you saw yesterday, to cleaning up tabs or drafting emails in-line, Atlas transforms the web into your workspace, with ChatGPT assisting the entire time.

Here are the 7 standout features that make ChatGPT Atlas a game-changer.

    1. ChatGPT in every tab

Each new tab in Atlas can become a conversation with ChatGPT. You can type a question, paste a link or launch into a full-on research task. Now, without tabbing back to ChatGPT, you will have a dedicated search, image, video and news tabs with ChatGPT integrated to help you dive deeper.

    2. Context-aware AI assistant

Atlas understands your current webpage, open tabs and even your login status (with your permission), so it actually has context, similar to what users experience within ChatGPT — only better, as OpenAI claims. During the live stream today, the team added that with Atlas, users will get more relevant and personal responses when researching, shopping or writing.

    3. In-line writing help

If you like using ChatGPT for writing, you’ll probably find the integration helpful when replying to emails, editing Google Docs, or even filling out your next job application. With in-line writing help, ChatGPT Atlas can help you rewrite or refine wherever you go on the web, right within the field, so no copy and pasting text again.

    4. Built in memory

When enabled, browser memory lets Atlas remember pages you’ve visited, tasks you’ve started or ideas you’ve explored, just like an actual assistant. So, you don’t have to keep multiple tabs open anymore. With ChatGPT Atlas, you can resurface them whenever relevant. You can edit, view or delete memories anytime.

    5. Natural language commands

You don’t need to worry about bookmarks and tab managers anymore. Just say things like “reopen the travel site from yesterday” or “close my recipe tabs,” and Atlas will take action. The natural language control promises to keep you more productive with fewer workflow interruptions.

Now in preview for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users, Agent Mode in Atlas goes beyond chat. It can research, plan, book things, summarize docs or even handle workflows across tabs — all autonomously.

    7. You set the rules to stay in control

Atlas is just like ChatGPT in that it offers full incognito mode, memory controls, parental settings and transparency around what’s remembered. Your browsing content isn’t used to train AI models, and you can always turn memory off so you stay in control.

    Final thoughts

It’s safe to say we’ve never seen a browser like this before. While AI browsers are becoming mainstream, Atlas stands out as a reimagining of how we interact with the internet via chatbot.

By deeply embedding ChatGPT into every part of the browsing experience, Atlas turns the web into a collaborative workspace with an AI assistant that understands your goals, remembers what matters to you and helps you take action.

To download it on your Mac now, visit chatgpt.com/atlas. Windows, iOS and Android support are coming soon.
