Disney+ and Hulu now have a combined login, so you can access Hulu either in its own app or as a Disney+ channel. The Hulu app will get shut down sometime next year. Until then, Disney brings you the ultra-popular Marvel and Star Wars franchises, while Hulu covers a more adult-oriented niche with loads of movies and shows from network partners.
The two services release a ton of content every week, so I’ll make it easy for you by picking three worthwhile new entries. The first full week of November brings us a fascinating deep dive into the making of Avatar, plus popular recent movies and more. The full list of TV shows and movies coming to the streaming services is below.
This Week on Hulu and Disney+: PCMag’s Picks
Fire And Water: Making The Avatar Films (Nov. 7, Disney+)
James Cameron’s Avatar series isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but you can’t deny the incredible technical advancements he brings to every movie about blue, nature-loving space people. This new documentary uses unprecedented access to cast and crew to show viewers the 680,000-gallon water tank used for diving scenes, the massive motion capture rigs, and all the other cool gear they use to make billions of dollars.
Director: Thomas C. Grane
Cast: James Cameron, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington
Genre: Documentary
Rating: TV-MA
Sovereign (Nov 7, Hulu)
Small-town crime thriller Sovereign didn’t get a lot of attention when it came out, but fans of Fargo will eat it up with a spoon. Nick Offerman plays sovereign citizen Jerry Kane, who’s convinced the US government has no hold on him as a free man. When he has a fatal run-in with a recent police academy graduate, it spurs a statewide manhunt and some seriously intense situations.
Director: Christian Swegal
Cast: Dennis Quaid, Jacob Tremblay, Terry J. Nelson
Genre: Thriller
Rating: R
IMDb Rating: 6.5/10
Freakier Friday (Nov. 12, Disney+)
It’s a nostalgia trip, but Freakier Friday packs some laughs into its well-worn premise. Twenty-two years after they switched bodies for the first time, Anna and Tess Coleman (played by Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis) do it again, this time each of them to a different teenager. Needless to say, hijinks ensue. It’s just frothy, family-friendly fun, and sometimes the world needs that.
