Large language models are currently everyone’s solution to everything. The technology’s versatility is part of its appeal: the use cases for generative AI seem both huge and endless. But then you use the stuff, and not enough of it works very well. And you wonder what we’re really accomplishing here.On this episode of The Vergecast, Nilay rejoins the show full of thoughts about the current state of AI — particularly after spending a summer trying to get his smart home to work. But before we get to that, we talk about our new ad-free podcast option, which launched this week!…

How do you follow up one of the greatest role-playing games (RPGs) ever made? The answer, according to developer The Chinese Room, is a shallow action title set in a lifeless, empty world with a bland story, apocalyptically bad pacing, and janky, repetitive combat.Review infoPlatform reviewed: PS5Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S, PCRelease date: October 21, 2025Where its legendary predecessor offered fantastic freedom of choice, a…
Acting can be a chaotic career choice, especially when it comes to getting chosen for a particular role. The competition is fierce, and it can often be a toss-up over who gets what role. And even when an actor lands a role, it’s not always a guarantee that recasts won’t happen. It’s a volatile business, and anything can really happen, especially the stuff you least expect. Of course, we as viewers don’t really see this happen. We just hear about it on the news and then eventually watch the finished product, no matter who’s in it. But imagine some of…

Not all AI is created equal. And at home, AI technology is exploring capabilities that extend beyond apps and websites, including object recognition, water leak detection and conversational voice interactions with Gemini or Alexa Plus.I’ve been experimenting with cutting-edge features like these the past few years as they’ve become more common in home security and smart home tech. Here’s what I’m most impressed with right now, and how you can integrate these features to your home, too.1. Package recognition Package detection is offered through a variety of apps and connected security cameras. Tyler Lacoma/CNETOne of the earliest forms of AI…
Welcome to Edition 8.15 of the Rocket Report! This year has been, at best, one of mixed results for SpaceX’s Starship program. There have been important steps forward, including the successful reuse of the rocket’s massive Super Heavy booster. Clearly, SpaceX is getting really good at launching and recovering the 33-engine booster stage. But Starship itself, part spacecraft and part upper stage, hasn’t fared as well—at least it hadn’t until the last couple of months. After four Starships were destroyed in flight and on the ground in the first half of 2025, the last two missions ended with pinpoint splashdowns…

OpenAI has paused video generations of Martin Luther King Jr. on Sora at the request of King Inc., the estate that manages his legacy. The company said in an announcement on X that it worked with the estate to address how his “likeness is represented in Sora generations” after people used the app to create disrespectful depictions of the American civil rights leader. It’s not quite clear if OpenAI intends to restore Sora’s ability to generate videos with MLK in the future, but it’s wording implies it does and that it has only suspended the capability as it “strengthens guardrails…
The new controls will let parents stop their children from speaking with AI chatbots entirely or block access to specific characters they don’t like, Instagram lead Adam Mosseri and Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang wrote in a blog post announcing the changes on Friday. Meta’s AI assistant is a notable exception to this rule. The company says it will “remain available to offer helpful information and educational opportunities” with “age-appropriate protections in place.”Meta said parents will also be given some form of “insight” into how their kids are using AI, though it was light on details for what this…
