What if you could plan the perfect romantic getaway and then endlessly relive it until every single mistake was erased? The Australian sci-fi flick “The Infinite Man” is a darkly comedic and surprisingly insightful look at how the obsessive pursuit of perfection can unravel a relationship as well as time itself. And as far as I’m concerned, it’s a diamond in the rough when you’re sifting through Tubi for a great sci-fi experience.

It follows Dean (Josh McConville), a genius who attempts to engineer the ultimate anniversary weekend for his girlfriend Lana (Hannah Marshall). After it’s ruined by Lana’s ex, he spends a year building a time machine to go back and fix it. His meddling, however, creates a chaotic time loop that traps them along with many other versions of themselves, all seeking one thing: the perfect anniversary.

Want something smart, funny, and thought-provoking? This sci-fi romp is free to stream now on Tubi.

Dean’s meticulously planned anniversary for his girlfriend, Lana, is a total disaster. A visit from her arrogant ex-boyfriend ruins everything, and his perfect day for the couple falls to disaster. His solution? Instead of moving on, he wants a redo. Most people would just chalk it up to bad luck. He wants to turn back the clock, literally.

He spends the next year building a time machine to return to that weekend and create the perfect day. But his first attempt to change the past goes wrong, creating a new timeline and a new version of himself. And when he makes a mistake, he ends up making even more versions. The hotel where he planned his anniversary getaway is soon positively filled with multiple versions of him, Lana, and even Lana’s ex-boyfriend.

Dean ends up unraveling the fabric of time as he knows it, and he isn’t any closer to solving the problem. How can he get things to go back to normal? Is it even possible? Was his relationship worth completely destroying reality over?

Looking for a sci-fi film that’ll bend your brain into a pretzel? This is it. “The Infinite Man” stays in its single hotel location as Dean’s plan goes all to hell. One timeline splits into another, and we see him starting to lose it. And there are no real splashy special effects, just a tightly-written script and one particularly clever sequence involving a thrown lawn dart that we won’t spoil here.

Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.

Each new loop brings another complication, and every attempt to fix things fails spectacularly. No one can help Dean because the problem is entirely of his own making. And you really can’t help but feel sorry for him. It’s not just tense and nerve-racking when it comes to exploring his predicament, though. It’s actually quite funny. It’s also a powerful metaphor for how obsession and the inability to let go of the past can be more harmful than what we’re running from.

For a thriller that messes with your head rather than jumps out at you, “The Infinite Man” is a free watch on Tubi right now. And it’s a reminder that trying to engineer the perfect moment is a guaranteed way to ruin it.
