Three Ghostbusters films have followed the 1989 release of Ghostbusters 2, and none of them answered a very simple question: what happened to Oscar, the son of Sigourney Weaver’s character, Dana Barrett? Films like 2016’s Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire have each given us updates on characters from the franchise, but there’s never been anything about Oscar. And, speaking to Weaver this week, she seemed curious about it too.
Weaver is about to reprise her role as the Na’vi child, Kiri, in James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, and, on the occasion of that release, this io9 reporter somehow found himself in the same room with the living legend. We talked about Avatar, Cameron, Aliens, and more, but the nerd in us just had to sneak in a Ghostbusters question too. We were curious: with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan having rebooted the franchise, and Weaver even briefly reprising her role, was there ever any discussion of following up on what happened to Oscar?
“You know, when we made those films in the ’80s, sequels still were not cool,” Weaver told io9. “And so we took a big chance making two. And then I thought that what Jason did with this new line, I’m sure he has thought about that. And it wouldn’t surprise me if that happened. That would be fun.”
She then added a potentially unique spin on it. “Maybe both the twins who played [the character] could be in it,” she joked. “One was very happy on the set, and the other one didn’t like it.”
Weaver’s character showed up briefly in the end credits of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, showing that she and Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) were still friends. But that was the only time we got to see the character. And, of course, there has still never been any revelation on who or what Oscar’s father was. He and Weaver’s Avatar character have that in common.
You’ll find out more about that Avatar character, Kiki, when Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in theaters on December 19, and we’ll have more from the legendary actress soon. As for Ghostbusters, an animated feature film is in the works, as is a Netflix animated series, but there haven’t been significant public updates on either in a while. Maybe Oscar stars in one.
