If at one point it felt like Google was close to calling it quits on Fitbit after acquiring it, that no longer appears to be the case. In a recent update, Google is bringing its new Material 3 Expressive redesign to the Fitbit app. In fact, as 9to5Google notes in its report, it might very well be the most comprehensive Material 3 Expressive application to date.

What’s new in the Fitbit Material 3 Expressive redesign

So, what’s new and what can you expect from the update? For starters, it is obvious that the looks are the biggest change in the Fitbit Material 3 Expressive redesign. It introduces a shorter bottom navigation bar alongside a pull-down sync gesture that works from any of the four main tabs.

When you sync, you will see a unique loading indicator that cycles through new shapes. This helps to create a visual experience that feels fresh and modern. Once syncing completes, the “Fitbit Premium” label vanishes and gets replaced by a linear progress bar.

The new Material 3 Expressive shapes now highlight completed goals with checkmarks, making your achievements more satisfying. The Today, Fitness, and Sleep feeds showcase a distinct sheet design where key stats sit on a background layer that themes the status and app bars. Detailed cards scroll on a separate sheet, with teal coloring for Fitness and purple for Sleep. However, the app doesn’t yet support Dynamic Color, meaning UI elements like the bottom bar and FAB stick with a default blue accent.

The standout feature is the “fluid and natural motion” throughout the app. According to reports, navigation feels smooth when you swipe back from detailed stat pages. Charts also load fluidly from left to right when you launch the app. And for those who need a little helping hand, the AI-powered Personal Health Coach, built with Gemini, acts as a fitness trainer, sleep coach, and health advisor rolled into one.

The Material 3 Expressive rollout continues

Like we said earlier, this Fitbit Material 3 Expressive redesign represents the most comprehensive implementation of Google’s new design language so far. In fact, it goes beyond even the new Google Home app in terms of visual polish and animation fluidity. Google appears committed to rolling out Material 3 Expressive across its services, with Fitbit leading the charge.

The redesign and AI health coach will launch next year, with the current public preview available only in the US. For Fitbit users who’ve experienced the massive overhaul of the app earlier this year, this Material 3 Expressive update represents a modern leap forward in how you interact with your health data.
