September’s record 43-10 defeat by South Africa on home soil and the impending exit of assistant coach Jason Holland illustrate that New Zealand aren’t where they want to be, but there’s a growing sense that the southern hemisphere nations as a whole have raised the bar. With Australia and Argentina also involved in the end-of-year rugby internationals, Ireland can’t yet afford to take top seeding at the 2027 Rugby World Cup for granted.
