Samsung Electronics announced today (Oct 30) that Samsung TVs would be “the first” to support HDR10+ content on both Disney Plus and Hulu.

“HDR10+ revolutionizes the way we enjoy content, offering enhanced contrast and more vivid colors for an unparalleled viewing experience,” stated Inbeom Kim, Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics in a press release.

The Disney Plus and Hulu combination should offer access to more than 1,000 titles with HDR10+ support with more to come.

According to Samsung HDR10+ support will be available via Samsung Crystal UHD TVs and above from 2018 forward, as well as some Samsung Smart Monitors. That list includes Samsung’s 2025 sets like the QN990F Neo QLED 8K, the QN90F 4K, the 115-inch QN90F QLED, The Frame and The Frame Pro and the $30,000 Micro RGB TV.

Additionally, Samsung says that these models will integrate Samsung Vision AI to improve picture and sound and bring new AI experiences to your TV.

On a simple level, high dynamic range or HDR content delivers more realistic shades and colors which should provide a more cinematic experience on your TV screen.

Most HDTVs now utilize HDR10. In contrast, HDR10+ uses dynamic metadata that “provides content image statistics on a per-frame basis, enabling optimized tone mapping adjustments for each scene.”

In practice this means you should see more details, more colors and more distinct shades when watching movies and shows.

While HDR has been around for more than a decade there are different versions of it including Dolby Vision and HDR10+. A lot of modern TVs support Dolby Vision but some, like some Samsung sets, only support HDR10+ and not Dolby Vision, meaning you can’t enjoy content at that higher level.

Recently, Netflix announced that it is now rolling out HDR10+ support to more than 5,500 hours of content. The streamer announced that it plans to make all HDR titles compatible with 10+ before the end of 2025.

For those who have been enjoying Dolby Vision support, you likely won’t see a difference between the two except on Samsung TVs which don’t support that format. With Netflix and now Hulu and Disney Plus adding HDR10+ support, your home viewing should get a lot crisper.
